THE UPPER ROOM IS A DROP-IN CENTRE IN MULLINGAR PROVIDING A SPACE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO HANG OUT AND FEEL AT HOME AFTER SCHOOL.
We opened our doors for the first time on 2nd February and have averaged between 35 and 60 young people attending each week. Based in Mullingar, Youth for Christ Ireland recognised that there was a need for young people to gather in a safe place, where they could meet with friends old and new, and be encouraged to engage with our trained staff who are situated in every room. It’s a place for conversations, in a fun and friendly environment.
Currently, The Upper Room, open Fridays from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, contains: a Living Room for card games and casual chats over sweets, biscuits, hot chocolate or tea; Game Room with Xbox, PlayStation and Wii; Rec Room, with pool table, ping pong and air hockey; and our Quiet Room for deeper conversations amidst questions and activities focusing on God and faith.

The team have been leading a TY Religious Education module using the newly released NUA video series and have also been offering mentoring for pupils in our school. I have worked alongside the Youth for Christ team over the last 3 years and in different situations. I am impressed with the way in which they engage so easily with teenagers in a gentle and respectful way. They have no agenda and young people do not find them intimidating. The Youth for Christ team that I have worked alongside simply witness to Jesus and its this gentle and authentic witness that is attracting young people to being a conversation with them.
Youth for Christ have a real heart for young people which was clear in the way they approached and delivered a comprehensive and engaging Confirmation preparation programme. They were so keen to adapt their resources to the particular needs of young people in my parish in a way which was both faith-based and fun filled. I find them to be gifted communicators and their material to be full of substance.
MCF Community Church is thrilled to support YFC in providing facilities for the ‘Upper Room Drop In’ project in Mullingar. It’s a great privilege to partner with YFC in providing these informal settings to further relationships in a Christian context with local young people.
As TY coordinator it’s been great having the YFC team participate in our classes and on retreats, the boys have thoroughly enjoyed it and gained a lot from their enthusiasm about faith and genuine care for the whole student…
